29

I turned a year older last June 3. I'm not big on parties during my birthdays so my family and I usually eat out on these occasions. We went to Cafe Marco at the Marco Polo Hotel to celebrate. We were all stuffed (you would be, too) and could barely move so the pictures were limited. :)

OF CUPCAKES AND ART

I think I was four when I had my first cupcake. It was the classic cupcake beehive - chocolate cupcake topped with marshmallow icing dipped in chocolate. It was a favorite afternoon treat my father would always buy me after school.

Of course, since then, a lot of new flavors became available. I'm a sucker for chocolate so my favorite flavors are chocolate cupcake with chocolate buttercream and chocolate cupcake with peppermint frosting. I don't know what's with mint and chocolate combined altogether but its something that I have always loved.

Here are some cupcakes that I made for the last few months. :)

Busy Mothers' Day

After driving back and forth delivering more than 600 cupcakes today, Julianna and I were able celebrate a bit of what's left of Mothers' Day. It was already 3pm when we were finally done with the deliveries and we certainly did not want to go the mall at that hour. The Pacquiao / Mosley fight just ended (Congratulations, Manny!) and that means a considerable surge of shoppers. I’m not a huge fan of boxing but in my country, a Manny Pacquiao fight means people stopping dead in their tracks and putting everything on hold – or at least until the fight is over. We started driving around at 8am to drop off orders and it was total bliss. We had the roads and streets all to ourselves. I only saw a couple of jeepneys. In the Philippines, jeepneys are your New York yellow cabs, but only cheaper.

At 3pm, we dropped off the last cupcake box and Julianna suggested that we go check new books at National Bookstore before going to church. I’m an NBS baby myself so I was more than willing to spend time there. Julianna and I went to Cebu’s first NBS branch, the one on Mango Avenue. I went to St. Theresa’s College since Preschool and this particular NBS branch is practically a stone’s throw away. I love NBS. The smell and everything about these stores bring all sorts of childhood memories.

I ended up buying a tiny cutter, a pair of scissors, some glue for Julianna and a couple of notebooks. Mine is the one on the left. Obviously, the design caught my eye! I wasn't able to convince (or bully! hehe ) Julianna into buying the other cupcake covered notebook. While this one has pink stripes, the other had brown and pink polka dots. When Julianna said she wanted this Hello Kitty spring notebook, I decided to pick this over the other because of the cupcake color. It's more catchy and brighter.

On a separate note, an article came out last Thursday in Sunstar Daily Cebu featuring The Cupcake Theory (for a Mother's Day tribute). Thank you very much to Logane Echavez and Sunstar. :)

Color Splash

I love molding sugar paste (fondant) and carving cakes but coloring sugar paste is no easy feat! I have to constantly wash my hands and wipe my working table silly to prevent the colors from mixing with one another.

Here are some colors that I usually use in making funky and fun cakes.
Lemon yellow, Turquoise, Sky Blue, Hot Pink, Electric Green, and Golden Yellow

Combined, the cake looks like this:
